phantasea story

I found the NFBC in 2019. I was looking for a new hobby, and fantasy had always called to me. I learned about Roto in the Second Chance leagues while teaching myself the whole MLB player pool. I credit Paul Sporer and The Sleeper and the Bust Podcast for how I found out about the NFBC. Before that I was a casual Orioles fan, and I really barely knew the player pool. I fell in love with the game. Some days it feels like my brain just works like Roto.

In 2022 I started posting NFBC stuff on X and began thinking about tools built around NFBC data. With a C# background, I spent the summer of 2024 putting in hundreds of hours connecting all of the NFBC's separate Roto views into one picture. That work is the real value of phantasea. I'm grateful for the support of the NFBC along the way.

phantasea has been rebuilt more than once along the way. It started as a small static app, then became a Blazor Server site. Now it's being rebuilt again on a faster, modern foundation with a real database behind it with Blazor WebAssembly, setting up what comes next.

The name is a play on fantasy. There's a sea of data under every season, and the "ph" is a nod to Stephens everywhere. Sorry, Stevens.

The mission

phantasea is a learning tool. It's built for anyone who plays fantasy baseball, especially players thinking about jumping into the NFBC for the first time. NFBC veterans can sharpen their game here too. It's a place to study how the best players in the game actually win: how they draft, how they use FAAB, and how they climb the standings.

For the players, by a player.
